How to Repair Your Garage Door

If you run into not very serious problems with your garage door, you can perfectly resolve them yourself without calling any professional Phoenix garage door repair services. A sound garage door ensures the security of your property inside the garage as well as won’t fall on someone or something, so you should do repair it as soon as possible. Now, we will give you a few tips on maintenance that you can do yourself.

So, what do you do if something is not okay with the garage door?

  1. The first thing to do is checking the metal tracks inside the garage. Examine them with the garage door closed for flat spots, dents, or other defects. Fix them with a rubber mallet or hammer and a block of scrap wood. Tighten loose bolts or screws of the track. If the tracks are badly damaged, consider replacing them altogether.
  2. Check the alignment of the tracks. Horizontal tracks should slant a little down towards the back of the garage. The vertical sections should be exactly upright. Besides, tracks on both sides should be at the same height. To resolve issues with alignment, you can loosen the screws holding the tracks and carefully tap the tracks into the right position. After checking the right alignment with a level, you can tighten the bolts.
  3. Thoroughly clean the tracks with concentrated household cleanser if necessary and then wipe them dry.
  4. Look for loose hardware. Check for loose screws and tighten them. Sagging of one or both sides of the door can be resolved with servicing the hinges. Replace screws if the screw holes are enlarged. If there is cracked wood by a hinge, you should remove the hinge and replace the wood with either another one or wood filler. After letting the latter dry, put the hinge back on. Move the hinge on solid wood if you can.

If your door has torsion spring at its center, do not try to repair the door as the tension of the spring can seriously injure you. In the case you need to remove or replace the torsion spring, call a professional repair service. Generally, if you have to engage with any kind of complex mechanisms during repair works, you should look for the help of a professional garage door service.

Besides some minor interior issues, you might be confronted by issues with the garage door opener itself. It is the most important tool as it manages the process of opening and closing your garage door. Garage door openers usually consist of a motor, a rail, a carriage along the rail, a drawbar attached to the carriage moving the door between its highest and lowest points, and a relay or reversing switch. Some garage door openers have travel limiting devices to help the door move precisely between the fully opened and closed states.

The rail should be located directly in the center of the garage door. That is done so the weight is evenly balanced on the mechanism. If there are any issues with the right centering of the rail, you might consider readjusting it. But you might need to do considerable work depending on the way your garage door opener is attached to the supporting surface directly above the garage door. To fix the balancing of the rail, you will need to measure the width of the garage door and mark its center with a vertical line. Ideally, the rail should move along that line. Readjust the garage door opener yourself or call a professional if you need to.

Know when you should call professionals, but always look after your garage door. Good luck!
